FORGOTTEN STORY FINDS ITS VOICE
THE UNTOLD STORY BEHIND THE FOUR CARDINAL VIRTUES RING
Its story began centuries ago in Bamberg Cathedral. During a visit to the cathedral, four medieval stone reliefs inspired the creation of one of our most recognizable rings.
What Story Would You Wear?
A DISCOVERY IN BAMBERG CATHEDRAL
Several years ago, one of our customers was traveling through Bamberg, Germany.
While visiting Bamberg Cathedral, he stopped in front of the marble sarcophagus of Pope Clement II. Carved into its four sides were four beautiful reliefs representing the Cardinal Virtues: Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, and Temperance.
Deeply inspired by what he had seen, he photographed the reliefs, returned home, and decided to transform them into a ring.
That journey eventually led him to our workshop.
THE TOMB OF POPE CLEMENT II
At the heart of Bamberg Cathedral rests the tomb of Pope Clement II, one of the finest examples of medieval sculpture in Germany. Its marble sarcophagus is surrounded by four beautifully carved reliefs depicting the Cardinal Virtues—Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, and Temperance. Nearly eight centuries after they were created, these timeless figures continue to inspire new works of art, including our Four Cardinal Virtues Ring.

DISCOVERING THE FOUR CARDINAL VIRTUES
When we first received the photographs, we did not immediately recognize their historical significance.
To us, they were simply beautiful medieval carvings.
As we researched their origin, we discovered a philosophy that had shaped civilizations for more than two thousand years.
The Four Cardinal Virtues first appeared in ancient Greek philosophy, were embraced by Roman thinkers, and later became one of the foundations of Christian moral teaching.
What had started as a custom jewelry project gradually became a fascinating historical journey.

FROM STONE RELIEFS TO PROJECT
Our goal was never to copy the sarcophagus.
Instead, we wanted to preserve the character of each relief while transforming them into a piece of jewelry that could be worn every day.
Every figure was carefully adapted to fit the circular form of the ring while maintaining the spirit of the original artwork.
When the design was complete, we presented it to our client.

THE RING WITHOUT INSCRIPTIONS
This is where the story took an unexpected turn.
Originally, we suggested adding the names of the four virtues around the ring.
Our client politely declined. He wanted his personal ring to remain exactly as he envisioned it — without any inscriptions.
I asked him why. His answer has stayed with me ever since.
“If I need the names written on the ring to understand these virtues, then I have not yet earned the right to wear it.”
We respected his decision completely. His ring was crafted without any inscriptions.
Later, however, when we decided to introduce this design into our permanent collection, we made one small change.
For the production version, we added the Latin names — Prudentia, Justitia, Fortitudo, and Temperantia.
Not because they look beautiful.
But because most people discover the Four Cardinal Virtues for the first time through this ring.
We wanted it to become more than jewelry. We wanted it to inspire curiosity.
FROM A PRIVATE COMMISSION TO A PUBLIC COLLECTION
Before adding the ring to our collection, I asked our client one final question.
“Would you mind if we offered this design to other people?”
His answer was immediate.
“Of course not.”
That simple conversation allowed the Four Cardinal Virtues Ring to become part of the INDIGO Jewelry collection.
Not every custom project follows this path.
Many of the pieces we create remain exclusive to the person who commissioned them. Family crests, personal symbols, and deeply private stories are never reproduced without permission.
This ring became an exception because its creator wanted its message to be shared.
THE STORY WE ALMOST FORGOT

The place where the idea was born — photographed more than a decade after I first saw it.
Curiously, although this ring became one of our most popular designs, we never told its story.
Years passed.
New projects came and went.
Somewhere along the way, we simply forgot how it all began.
What I never imagined was that more than ten years after first seeing those photographs and hearing the story behind them, I would find myself standing before the very tomb where it all had started.
By pure coincidence, I visited Bamberg.
As I descended into the cathedral and stood before the tomb of Pope Clement II, I recognized the reliefs instantly.
In that moment, everything came back.
I remembered the customer, the photographs, the conversations, and the journey that had brought this ring into existence.
That is why this story is finally being told today.
Sometimes the most meaningful stories simply wait for the right moment to be remembered.
This is more than a ring. It’s a story you carry with you. Create your own symbol — with INDIGO Jewelry.
